As part of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) work to regulate historic landfills across the
country, professional bodies such as the Institute of Geologists of Ireland (IGI) have been requested
by the EPA to provide a register of “Qualified Persons” who are capable of conducting professional
hydrogeological assessment of:
- Landfills (modern, historic & unauthorised); and
- Contaminated Sites
Shane Herlihy, Managing Director of Environmental Risk Solutions, with 20 years hydrogeological
and contaminated land consultancy experience has been nominated to the IGI’s first register of
Qualified Persons.
The EPA will be relying on Qualified Persons to formally assess and sign off on risk assessment of
historic landfills using the Code of Practice (COP) for historic and unauthorised landfills and new
